In 2026, Ontario painters commonly price ceilings at about $1.85 to $2.15 per square foot, baseboards at about $2.25 per linear foot and interior doors at $110 to $140 each, painted on both sides. Those are Ontario benchmark rates, not a quote. In Durham Region, from Bowmanville and Clarington to Oshawa, Whitby, Ajax and Pickering, your real number depends on how much trim you have, what shape it is in and how high your ceilings run. This guide shows how the pieces add up so you can read any quote with confidence.

TL;DR

  • Ceilings, trim and doors are priced separately from walls. Trim and doors take far more hands-on labour per dollar of paint than open wall space.
  • Ontario benchmarks for 2026: ceilings about $1.85 to $2.15 per sq. ft., baseboards about $2.25 per linear foot, interior doors $110 (brushed) to $140 (sprayed).
  • A single bedroom with ceiling, baseboards, one door and its casing lands in the low-to-mid hundreds of dollars. A whole house of trim and doors reaches into the thousands.
  • Ask for a written quote that lists walls, ceilings, trim and doors as separate lines. In Ontario, a renovation contract over $50 must be in writing.

Why ceilings, trim and doors are priced differently from walls

A wall is a big, flat surface. A roller covers it quickly. Trim and doors are the opposite: narrow, detailed and unforgiving. A painter fills nail holes, sands, caulks the gaps, applies primer where needed, then cuts a straight line with a brush, usually two coats. Doors add edges, panels, hinges and hardware to work around.

That is why experienced painters itemize four categories: walls, ceilings, trim and doors. A single flat house price hides what is included. It can obscure whether door casings, baseboards or stairwell heights were counted at all.

Four categories in an itemized painting quote

Ceilings have their own logic. They are fast to roll, but the work is physically harder, the prep can involve stains or texture, and the painter needs to protect floors and furniture. Ceiling paint is usually flat white, which keeps the material cost low and the rate per square foot modest.

2026 price benchmarks for Ontario

The table below uses the published Ontario rates from the Ontario interior painting cost guide and the casing figure from its companion calculator. They are reference points for comparing quotes, not LA Rocks Renovations prices.

Item Typical Ontario rate (2026) What it usually covers
Ceilings $1.85 to $2.15 per sq. ft. Flat white, standard height
Baseboards $2.25 per linear foot Two coats, caulked
Door casing $45 per opening Two coats, caulked
Interior door, brushed $110 per door Both sides
Interior door, sprayed $140 per door Both sides

For context on walls, the same source lists new drywall at $2.25 to $3.00 per square foot and repainting existing walls in good shape at $2.75 to $3.75 per square foot. Notice that ceilings are cheaper per square foot than walls, while trim and doors are priced by the piece because their labour does not scale with area.

Other published ranges vary. Some Durham-area price pages quote interior painting by the room, and some Canadian guides price doors and trim at $2 to $5 per linear foot. Differences come from prep level, paint quality and whether doors are sprayed. Treat any single figure as a starting point and let an on-site measurement settle it.

Worked example: one bedroom

Take a 12 by 12 ft bedroom with an 8 ft ceiling, one door and one closet door. The numbers below use the Ontario benchmarks above.

  1. Ceiling: 144 sq. ft. at $1.85 to $2.15 comes to roughly $266 to $310.
  2. Baseboards: the perimeter is 48 ft. Subtract about 3 ft for the door opening and you have roughly 45 ft. At $2.25 per linear foot, that is about $101. A closet adds a few more feet.
  3. Doors: two doors painted both sides at $110 brushed come to $220, or $280 if sprayed at $140 each.
  4. Casing: two openings at $45 add $90.

Add it up and the ceiling, baseboards, two doors and casings total roughly $677 to $781 for the room, depending on the ceiling rate and brushed or sprayed doors. Walls would be extra. If the room has taller ceilings, crown moulding, or heavily damaged trim, expect the figure to climb.

A useful habit: ask your contractor for the same breakdown on your own rooms. If the quote cannot be reduced to lines like these, you cannot compare it fairly.

Worked example: one bedroom — overview diagram

Worked example: a typical Durham home

Consider a two-storey home in Courtice or Whitby with five interior rooms, a hallway, a staircase and about 12 interior doors. A rough picture of the trim and door portion alone:

  • Doors: 12 doors at $110 to $140 each is $1,320 to $1,680.
  • Baseboards: about 300 linear feet at $2.25 is $675.
  • Casings: 14 openings at $45 is $630.
  • Ceilings: 1,000 sq. ft. of ceiling at $1.85 to $2.15 is $1,850 to $2,150.

That sums to roughly $4,475 to $5,135 before any wall painting. These are illustrative calculations from published Ontario rates and assumed room sizes, not a promise about your house. Your measurements will differ, and so will the condition of your surfaces.

If you want to see how these items fit into a full-home figure, our guides on painting costs in Durham Region and whole-house interior painting in Bowmanville go through the larger scope.

What pushes the price up or down

Ceiling factors

  • Height: 9 ft or 10 ft ceilings, vaulted ceilings and stairwells need ladders or scaffolding and more setup time.
  • Texture: stippled or popcorn finishes take longer and use more paint.
  • Stains and repairs: water marks need stain-blocking primer, and cracks or seams need drywall work first. Our page on drywall repair and patching covers that side.
  • Colour: a flat white ceiling is the baseline. Dark colours need extra coats.

Trim and baseboard factors

  • Profile: a plain baseboard is quicker than a tall, layered profile or crown moulding.
  • Existing finish: glossy or damaged trim needs sanding and priming. Fresh coats over sound trim are cheaper.
  • Colour change: going from dark stain to white is a bigger job than refreshing white with white.
  • Caulking: gaps between trim and wall make a visible difference in the finish and add prep time.

Door factors

  • Brushed or sprayed: spraying gives a smoother finish and, in the Ontario benchmark, costs $30 more per door.
  • Panel style: six-panel doors have more edges than flat slab doors.
  • Hardware: removing knobs and hinges gives cleaner results than taping around them.
  • Both sides and edges: confirm the price covers both faces and the edges.

How to read a painting quote

Professional painters point out that a one-number quote with no scope breakdown is often a warning sign of poor communication. Clear pricing states walls, ceilings, trim and doors separately.

When quotes arrive, check each for:

  1. Itemized lines for walls, ceilings, trim and doors, with the number of doors and the linear feet of baseboard.
  2. Coats and primer: how many coats, and where primer is included.
  3. Prep: patching, sanding and caulking, and whether it is included or extra.
  4. Paint: brand, product line and finish for each surface, and whether it is low-VOC.
  5. Sprayed or brushed doors.
  6. Protection and cleanup: floors, furniture, and daily tidy-up.
  7. Tax and timeline: whether HST is included, start date and expected duration.

The Ontario government’s advice on hiring contractors is to get quotes from at least three businesses. That guidance appears on its roofer page, but the logic applies to any renovation: a written quote should describe the work clearly and itemize costs. We go through the same checklist in our written-scope guide for interior painters and how to compare interior painting quotes.

Your rights when you sign a painting contract in Ontario

Under Ontario’s rules for home renovation businesses, any contract worth more than $50 must be in writing. If you sign in your home, it is a direct agreement, and you generally get a 10-calendar-day cooling-off period in which you can cancel for any reason without penalty. The same government guide recommends keeping deposits to a maximum of 10% of the total project cost.

If a painter asks for a large cash deposit or a handshake agreement, treat that as a reason to slow down. Read the Ontario guide before you sign, and contact the Ministry of Public and Business Service Delivery or a lawyer if a contract looks unclear or you believe your rights were not respected. Our article on Ontario’s $50 written-contract rule and drywall repair explains how this applies to a typical painting and repair job.

Paint choice and indoor air

Paint is a small share of a trim and door quote, but it matters for your home. Health Canada advises choosing low-VOC products because paints and varnishes release emissions that can irritate the airways or cause headaches, particularly during renovation. Ventilate while painting and as the paint dries. If anyone in your household has asthma, is pregnant, or is very young or elderly, tell your contractor in advance so the schedule and product can be planned around them, and ask your family doctor if you have a health concern.

Trim enamel is a place where durability counts. Doors and baseboards are touched, kicked and scrubbed more than any wall. A harder, washable finish may cost a little more in materials but holds up longer in a busy family home.

Our view on trim, ceiling and door work

We see the same pattern in Bowmanville, Clarington and across Durham Region: homeowners are surprised that a few doors and some baseboard cost more than a big bedroom wall. The reason is simple. A wall is quick area. Trim is careful craft.

Three things we tell customers:

  • Fix before you finish. Dented trim, loose casing and ceiling cracks show through fresh paint. If trim needs replacing, it is cheaper to install new baseboards and paint them once than to paint old ones twice. We install trims and baseboards and handle drywall repair, so the prep and the paint stay under one scope.
  • Do the ceiling with the walls. Setup, masking and floor protection are shared, so painting ceilings, trim and doors in the same visit is usually more efficient than separate trips.
  • Insist on a written scope. Number of doors, linear feet of trim, ceiling areas and finishes should be on paper. Clear communication is what keeps a painting job on budget.

We are a locally owned and fully insured contractor, and we price from the actual rooms, not from a rule of thumb. The benchmarks in this article help you check any quote, ours included.

Is it worth hiring a painter for trim and doors?

DIY can save labour costs, but trim and doors are where amateur work shows most: drips, uneven cut lines and missed prep. If you are weighing it, our guide to hiring a painter versus DIY in Ontario walks through the trade-offs. If you do paint yourself, read Health Canada’s chemical safety advice for DIY projects, including never mixing household chemical products and checking hazard symbols.

FAQ

How much does it cost to have trim and doors painted in Durham Region?

Using Ontario 2026 benchmarks, baseboards run about $2.25 per linear foot and interior doors $110 brushed or $140 sprayed, both sides. Casing is about $45 per opening. A room’s worth of trim and a door typically lands in the low hundreds of dollars, and a whole house reaches the thousands. A measured quote is the only way to get your exact figure.

How much does it cost to paint a ceiling?

Ontario painters commonly charge about $1.85 to $2.15 per square foot for a flat white ceiling. A 12 by 12 ft bedroom ceiling is therefore roughly $266 to $310. High, textured or stained ceilings cost more.

Should ceilings, trim and doors be quoted separately from walls?

Yes. Separate lines let you compare quotes accurately and show what is included. A single flat number often hides details such as casings, baseboards or stairwell heights.

Is a deposit normal on a painting job?

Often, but keep it modest. The Ontario government guide recommends deposits of no more than 10% of the total project cost, and requires a written agreement for contracts over $50.
